Orange County Regulation of Firearms

PETITION TO REQUEST PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE REGULATION OF FIREARMS

A Citizen Petition to the Orange County, NC Board of County Commissioners

Date: September 3, 2019

This Citizen’s petition is presented under protection guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States for "the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances".

I, Wendy Fontela, a United States Citizen and legal resident of Orange County, North Carolina petition the Orange County Board of County Commissioners to conduct all meetings regarding firearm ordinances, in whatever form they may be described, in open session and to allow public comment. There is no justifiable reason for closed door meetings or meetings which do not allow public participation and comment when discussing rights guaranteed to all citizens of the United States under the Second Amendment.

The Commissioners’ commitment to holding open meetings with public comment opportunities when discussing firearm ordinances supports the BOCC goal and priority to “Promote an interactive and engaging system of governance that reflects community values.” It also reminds the Commissioners of their oath of office to "support the Constitution and laws of the United States.”

The Petitioner respectfully requests this petition be implemented immediately. Should the Commissioners deny this petition, Petitioner requests the Commissioners make a verbal and written public announcement within four working days from this petition as to why they are denying it.

Respectfully submitted:
